It's gonna be good!
Posted on Fri, Jun 18, 2010 at 2:43 pm

Hey Hey!
I'm hoping this finds you well, enjoying the beginnings of summer.
I've been home in Nashville recording my next record the past few months. For those that don't know -- I absolutely LOVE making records!!! And this one is no exception.
What a wonderful undertaking -- creating music that will be recreated for years to come. I've loved hearing from you all over the last few years what the songs from Apple Tree meant to you, so I find myself thinking of you guys as I write and record these new ones! These summer/fall tours will be the last of the tours we'll do supporting Apple Tree. Claire and Jordan and I are really looking forward to these shows. If you find yourself in one of these cities, please come say hi and we will do our best to not suck. If you wanna keep up with our shenanigans on the road come follow me on twitter!

much love,
katie

Hey there. Just sitting here at home wishing i was on a plane headed for Europe. No dice. Check back here for updates on which shows will be canceled or follow me on twitter! I'm @katieherzig. Hi.

More than 144 Characters Here
Posted on Thu, Mar 4, 2010 at 11:10 am

I'm discovering the tweet is much easier than the blog. But i must take advantage of getting to type something more than 144 characters. Soon I'll be writing songs with just 144 characters. Actually I probably already have....

So I am officially on a tour break for 1.5 months in which i get to enjoy the comforts of being at home in Nashville. We just returned from a fabulous week on the Cayamo Cruise. I was very happy to get to meet so many new artists and watch and perform with artists i love and respect. We made a couple stops in Belize and Costa Maya Mexico where the sun shone and it was very warm! This has felt like one of the longest coldest winters in a long time. But maybe every year I feel that way. Anyhow, I am still glowing from it, and if you might ever consider going on a music cruise, I suggest Cayamo.

I have officially started working on my next record. I have about half of it written probably and have started to record some of these songs. I actually keep having dreams where i've written songs in them but the melodies leave my head the moment I wake up. Its so sad. Luckily i've been able to capture some of those inspired moments when i'm awake as well. This record will certainly have a theme, I am discovering. Though I cannot reveal that to you yet as it is very top secretive.

I'd also like to mention that April 22 - May 18th we're going to be touring UK/Ireland/Europe with Brandi Carlile and her band. So excited about that! Tourdates posted soon. If you're curious though visit www.brandicarlile.com for the dates.

Aside from writing/recording i've spent time catching up on FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS latest season! And I just started reading Peter Hedges new book THE HEIGHTS. Both I highly recommend.

Peace. kt

Hi All!

Little update to kick off December.

I am currently out on the road on with the Ten out of Tenn Christmas Tour.
About 4 shows in with a couple weeks left... and loving it. If you don't know a thing about ten out of tenn, it's time. It's a wonderful taste of some of the best among Nashville's talented artists. We all come together for one show, each playing a couple songs and there is much collaboration. Check this out for a little peak.

AND...

I am really happy to be apart of a Holiday Compilation featuring artists like Brandi Carlile, Brett Dennon, Meiko, Dar Williams, Greg Laswell, Josh Ritter, Joshua Radin and more.... go here to download it for free, in exchange for your email address. I have a new song on it called "Dance in a Straight Line" that I wrote with my friend Bonnie Baker.

NEW "Live in Studio: Acoustic Trio" Record
Posted on Thu, Oct 1, 2009 at 2:00 pm

October 1st through November 1st we will be giving away our acoustic record on our website here through Noisetrade. You have the choice of downloading for free and telling 5 friends about it or paying what you want. After the 30 days you will be able to get this record on ITunes and in our web store etc.

Claire and Jordan and I have been touring as a trio pretty full on for the past two years. Sometimes at the shows people would ask us for a recording similar to what they just heard. So we recently went into the studio for the day and made an acoustic live recording of the songs we've been singing on the road. Tons of people have already downloaded it just today!

Hope this finds you well and that you get a chance to hear the record... if you're into the acoustic side of life.

Best, Katie

Its been crazy. Well I mean busy. But really good. Today we rehearsed all day for this Fall Full-Band Tour we're doing. First time i've played these songs with full band in over a year and I have to say that i am so excited about the shows to come. To get to play these songs with such a talented group of people is just amazing. We have couple more days home before we hit the road. We're opening for Brandi Carlile and her band and headlining a few of our own, so please come out if you can.

OCT 1st we are releasing our new CD. Live in Studio:Acoustic Trio. Descriptive enough? visit www.katieherzig on OCT 1 and it'll be there free to download for one month. After that it's going to be all normal costing:) The goal with this record was to get Claire and Jordan and I in the studio playing these songs as a trio, just like we have for past two years on the road. To capture the trio goodness.

I very much look forward to seeing some of you guys out on that road this Fall. Keep checking back for tour dates as more are coming with Over The Rhine and Ten out of Tenn before the end of the year! Or better yet go to my web site and sign the mailing list and i'll bother you about it!

I tried to wear shorts and cowboy boots on stage tonight but Jordan (my multi-instrumentalizing side-kick) wouldn't let me. Well i could have done it, but she encouraged me not to. There's something about wearing cowboy boots and shorts that makes you feel like a free spirited little girl.

We have been touring a ton. This week it's been with the Wood Brothers. Then I get a week off, then I play one show with the Indigo Girls next week, which I'm very excited about, then two weeks off then we're doing Colorado and California with Marc Cohn. Marc Cohn hopefully won't care if i wear shorts and cowboy boots.

So tonight I have a brand new song that I wrote and recorded with Matthew Perryman Jones (my friend and uber-talented fellow Nashvillian) on the Season Finale of Grey's Anatomy. We wrote this song two years ago, but then both of our computers died before we could memorize it so we didn't have a copy of it for 2 years. But we were determined to bring this song back because we both loved it. We only remembered one line from the chorus. But then one night as I was going to bed, I kid you not, 3/4 of the song came back to me. I was drifting off to sleep and realized I was singing the words and melody to the song. So I got up and sang the melody into my new computer and typed the words into an email and sent it to Matthew. The next week he and I finished the song and recorded it. And a few weeks later its freaking on Grey's Anatomy! Kinda crazy. I love this song and can't wait for you to hear it. Tomorrow we'll tell you where you can get it!

Love and love,
Katie

Knock on Wood
Posted on Thu, Mar 26, 2009 at 8:29 pm

Well I've taken up the twitter lately so come find me there. www.twitter.com/katieherzig. I am currently on the road with the Tenn Out of Tenn Tour. We are making our way up the west coast currently, today somewhere in Oregon we've had a nice day off where I've done not a lot. I went to join the boys playing ultimate frisbee and I think that was a mistake. They were already three on three and then I started to play and each time we played and switched teams, mine lost every time.

I haven't written in awhile so i must mention that since I last wrote I also went on the Cayamo Cruise. It was so much fun!!! Some of my family came and Jordan and Claire came to play with me. We got to meet lots of the other musicians that we are fans of and we got to spend time on beaches and in other countries. I learned how to play Black Jack too. If any of you guys are ever considering going on that cruise I highly recommend it. My birthday fell on a day when we were in the Bahamas... so lovely.

Let's see what else. Oh I am doing this new thing with several of my artist friends, called Brite. Matthew Perryman Jones, Griffin House, Andy Davis, and more.... We are releasing one new song a month plus one live/demo/acoustic track... it's a site that you can subscribe to for $4.99/month to to get new music from all these artists that you can't get anywhere else yet, and part of the proceeds go to causes each artist selects. Check out www.briterevolution.com for details. And if you want to try it for a month for free go to www.brightrevolution.com/freemusic. I have a new song up there this month called "Hey NaNa" and the original demos to a few songs.... So check it on out.

Also I'm not sure if any of you have seen that magnet commercial for Frito Lay on TV but they used my song "Two Hearts Are Better Than One" on there which is now on Itunes and on www.noisetrade.com for just a bit longer.

If any of you are in any of the places this TOT tour is coming, come on out! We are having a blast! And thank you to all who've made it out to the shows so far.

I'm getting really good at sleeping on the bus... knock on wood.

Recapulation
Posted on Sat, Jan 10, 2009 at 5:55 pm

I have not written in while. I had a crazy great 2008! The second half of the year was nutty with tour dates and such. I toured with Claire and Jordan in the east for several weeks, I went to Germany with Ingrid Michaelson for a week to play with her--she recently put her album out over there--that was lots of fun and travel nastiness galore. I got my luggage after i got back to US and was 4 days into the Ten out of Tenn Christmas Tour. We had a great couple weeks of Christmas Touring and then i found myself in Colorado over Christmas visiting my family with a major case of JET LAG! I slept it off and my Mom gave me lots of travel things for Christmas. I wonder why.... Weird, for some reason Myspace isn't letting me push RETURN so i can't make new paragraphs. I suppose this will be one long paragraph. So anyway now it's 2009 and i'm trying to get better at juggling. Both literally and figuratively. I have these juggling balls that i got that i'd like to get really good at, i've been practicing. And then there is the figurative juggling i hope to get better at. I can only imagine what that looks like. I'll let you know when i figure it out. I am about to head out on WEST COAST Tour and then Hit a bit of the MID WEST all by the end of January. Check out my TOUR DATES. I'll be opening for Griffin House for a bunch of the shows. Speaking of Griffin, the TEn out of Tenn Christmas tour left us with some entertaining moments. Check out the new videos on the Multimedia page! Love, Katie

In other news, touring is going well! We're having fun out here. Hope to see you at a show if you're nearby. Thanks to those of you who have made it out!

Sex and the City Volume 2
Posted on Tue, Sep 23, 2008 at 11:58 am

Hey there!

Check out my new song "Look at You Now" featured on the soundtrack to Sex and the City (the movie) Volume 2. On Itunes and in stores today!

I had a really great opportunity to write and record this song specifically for the movie in the spring/summer. I flew out to LA and saw the scene where Carrie tries on on those amazing wedding dresses for a Vogue fashion shoot. When I first got the call i had all these ideas pour into my head so I flew out there with about 4 one-minute song ideas. I was so glad to get to see the clip because it turned out to be so much more elegant and special than i'd invisioned. At the time they had temped in Fergie's "Glamorous" song. I found it so odd to be trying to "beat" that song. Especially since I'm not really in that genre, though i'm quite the lover of pop music.

Most of my ideas i'd brought were a bit more playful. We identified one of my songs with the "look at you now" chorus as something that might work to be developed into a song. So for the next several days and weeks I went back and forth with them trying to get it to where it really worked for the scene. It's so different trying to write a song for a specific purpose other than my own. It really took me to new places, to new ways of creating music. I didn't play any guitar on this song, and i'm afraid that if i were asked to sing it live, i'd just better bring my ipod and lip sync.

In the end they used a song called "Click Flash" sung by Ciara, which i think works quite well for the scene. In the meantime i had all these song ideas and new ways of making music. I was really happy when they decided to use my song for the Volume 2 Soundtrack! Cason Cooley helped produce the track and Gary Paczosa and Brandon Bell mixed it.... same gang that helped me on my record "Apple Tree." If it aint broke... I love working with those guys.

So I suppose I just wanted to explain myself and let you know about the song. It's VERY different from anything I've done--production/lyric wise. And you can dance to it!!

Love, katie

One Tree Thrill and Next Big Nashville
Posted on Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 12:16 am

My parents kept asking me when Forevermore was going to be on One Tree Hill. I kept telling them, "I'll let you know!" Lo and behold it was tonight--according to some of my new myspace friends! Sorry Mom and Dad. I think you can see it online though, go to the CW website to watch newest episode. "Forevermore" plays i think in the very beginning of the episode.

AND!!

If you're in Nashville you are in for a treat! Next Big Nashville is this weekend. Everyone I know is playing! Get a pass and get out there and see some awesome shows! I'm playing Thursday night and with the Ten out of Tenn tour Saturday night. Click HERE for a schedule and ticket info!

Also, check out the tour dates, there are many with many more to come...

Hasta,
Katie

Spam People, quit sending me naked pictures
Posted on Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 11:03 pm

I feel sheepish for not having written blog lately. Not since beginning of July. So much has happened since then. I'm engaged! Just kidding. I'm disengaged. I've seen too many pictures of naked people in my inbox lately, but it makes me open the email before i can mark is as trash! But what good is it to mark as junk if i keep getting them? None. So I will no longer open them, Paris Hilton!

Ok sorry about that tangent. Now onto better memory lanes.

Well I went on the first Ten out of Tenn tour in July. That may have been the highlight of my summer, aside from a recent few minutes spent in a hammock on a shaded porch. But seriously, what an incredible tour. I had much fun! We travelled around the West in an old bus, Willy Nelson's former bur actually. I slept in his bunk i'm sure of it. We all came back feeling very sad it was over, so we will be reuniting for a close-out show for Next Big Nashville on July 13 (Cannery Ballroom). and a possible Christmas Tour in December... was I supposed to say that yet? Anyhow, thank you all who came out to those shows. Click HERE to see pics of the tour!

In other news, I'd like to thank Army Wives for using my song "I Hurt Too" in a recent Episode. I'll have some more songs on the television soon, next time i'll try to let you know BEFORE it happens, incase you want to watch how fun it is to make out to a sad song.

I'd like to thank PASTE MAGAZINE for featuring me in this month's "Best of What's Next" issue. They said very nice things, and I'm honored to be mentioned in such a group of musicians. They asked me to write an acceptance speech for it too. Talk about pressure. Pressure cooker. I thanked the obvious... LARA BARS, my mac, Oprah and I think a few others.

WHAT'S NEXT? Well you see I have a ton of shows coming up this fall and winter. More than ever it seems. More will be announced very soon. If you want to be the first to know..... please sign the email list. Or better yet, download my new record for free in exchange for your email HERE:

But my Tour dates start this week in Birmingham and Atlanta, then back to COLORADO!, then lots of stuff in the EAST.... INCLUDING! The HOTEL CAFE TOUR. I Will be on a few of those shows in this part of the country. I'm very excited to be apart of this tour!! Such great women will be apart of it. Good folk.

I was supposed to open a bunch of Tour Dates this fall for Will Hoge, but he was recently in a car accident and very badly injured. Thank goodness he will be okay. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers for a swift recovery. He is unable to tour the rest of the year. I think i'll still be on the tour dates listed with some possible additions with The Everybodyfields. Stay tuned.

Well i'm trying to go to bed before midnight tonight since i can. I hope this finds you rested. Let's face it, how often are we as rested as we should be? I'm not. But I did buy a Hammock so soon i think i'll have more peace in my heart.

Oh! Also two of my great friends and fellow musicians just came out with records. Matthew Perryman Jones' new record is called "Swallow the Sea." It's sooo good. It includes a song I wrote with him on it. Also, Peter Bradley Adams just came out with his record "Leavetaking." Sooo tasty. I sing on several of the songs on that record. Both of these records can be purchased on their websites or at ITUNES, so please check them out if you haven't already.

MKay.

Gosh could I have written a longer blog?
Yes. Yes I could have. This is what happens when I stray for so long. More soon!

Love and treasures,
Katie

FREE the TREE
Posted on Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 12:09 pm

Hi Friends,

Some of you guys already have my new record “Apple Tree.” And some of you don’t…YET. This announcement applies to both of you. I have decided to make this record FREE for anyone who would like to download it. Not only that, but the download has two exclusive BONUS TRACKS. Why, you ask?

Some friends of mine here in Nashville have started something called Noise Trade (www.noisetrade.com), which provides a way for me to give away my record to people who might want it, in exchange for A) Telling three friends about it or B) Paying whatever price you decide is fair (much like Radiohead did).

Most of the music I’ve found and loved was recommended to me by my friends. Word of mouth is a very powerful thing. Also, as an independent artist, I rely heavily on my mailing list to keep in touch with you guys. It's perhaps one of the most valuable things I have because it connects me directly to you.

Since I started giving away this record a couple days ago, hundreds of people have downloaded it in exchange for their email and telling their friends about it. It's pretty amazing. If you dig music I make, this is the perfect way for you to share it with any and everyone you know who you think also might like it!

***Click on this widget to download my music -- ***

**And if you’re feeling extra pumped -- share it with your friends by posting it on your facebook/blog/myspace or even import emails from hotmail, gmail, yahoo, etc. And if you go to www.noisetrade.com you will find some other fabulous records that artists are giving away. With more to come.

Tell me what you think!
Pay it forward and enjoy…

Love, Katie

PASTE and Billboard.
Posted on Mon, Jun 16, 2008 at 9:13 pm

Hey all of you readers out there.

I would like to both announce and thank two very awesome publications for writing about and featuring my music. Billboard Magazine did a nice little feature on me two weeks ago. I think it's off the stands now, so this is useless if you wanted to see it. Though I'm sure if you got creative you could find one.

But also PASTE Magazine has my song "Hologram" on their music sampler this month along with some other great artists. So pick up a copy if you can.

I'm happy to report my allergies are also gone. And my eyes are still in my head.

I gotta go and learn an Andy Davis and Sam and Ruby Song. We're playing a cover show this this Thursday at 12th in Porter in Nashville. Features Tyler James, Sam and Ruby, Jeremy Lister, Andy Davis and Michael Logan. Should rule.

Peace and shameless promo.

Diary of a girl who itched her eye balls out
Posted on Mon, May 26, 2008 at 12:14 am

I mean, what is the alloted number of times we are given to itch our eyes before our eyeballs fall out? I think i may be reaching that number. I was doing an interview the other day and i brought up the fact that i was itching my eyeball out while talking to her. She recalled a quote (possibly from Dennis Miller?) that said, "Isn't it mean that God made it feel so good when we rub our eyes?" Or something like that. Wasn't it Sheryl Crow who said, "If it makes you happy, it can't be that bad. If it makes you happy, then why the hell are you so sad?" That's how I feel when I ruby my allergy eyeballs.

Well okay, enough about those.

In today's REAL KH NEWS, my song "I Will Follow," is featured on this month's ITUNES Singer Songwriter Indie Spohtlight. It's basically a mix of songs from Independent artists that have just released a new record. It's got some great songs on it; new stuff from The Weapies and Jesca Hoop to name two. If you wanna check it out, click on this link:

Listen to Interview about new record
Posted on Wed, May 14, 2008 at 12:18 am

Hey guys, check out www.intothehill.com to hear a phone interview that Into the Hill did with me. It's pretty cool. They asked some good questions. Anyhow, i hope you enjoy. I had just woken up in the morning so that's why my voice sounds extra deep.

Giving Birth
Posted on Mon, May 12, 2008 at 11:44 pm

My mom says that releasing a cd is like giving birth. Somehow I think it's pretty different, but i guess, if you're into metaphors it is. I don't know who the dad is but oh well. Today I became the single mother of "Apple Tree." If you wanna know more about this record you can read my new bio. It explains a lot. But mostly i just want you to hear it!! So get it today on ITUNES or RIGHT HERE on my web site. If you order it on my web site my dad will mail it to you very shortly!! He has nice handwriting too.

Also, i have a new web site if you didn't notice. We're still honing it in trying to make it as user friendly as possible. Soon there will be a message board too. Let us know if you have suggestions.

Well I seriously need to sleep. I am on tour with Julie Lee and Steven Deloupolos for a couple weeks. We are in Pittsburgh. It rained today. It's been cold, but i only brought a jean jacket. brrrr.

I think I will write more soon.
love, katie

The Bodyguard
Posted on Mon, Feb 25, 2008 at 6:06 pm

I watched that last night when i should have been sleeping. But man. I LOVED that movie when it came out. I have to say i think I still do. Those songs. I still have a memory of being in the shower in my teenage years belting out “And Ieeeeiiii will always love you….” Whitney Houston…. where is she now? She is amazing. Not the best singer in the world, like Celine, but pretty much yeah.

Today we’re trying to finish mixing, and I think we will!!!
We’re making all the last changes. I get nervous during this part because you just hope that the last few choices you make you will be happy with. I think i will be. Because i’m starting to obsess about the smallest things and i’m sure if i stepped away from it I would hardly tell a difference. But at this point I can. I am ready to step away from this one…. to let it go and be what it is…. just say i’ve done the best i can with what i had kind of thing.

Yesterday did photoshoot for new record and website and press stuff. Oooooh La La. Photog Caleb Chancey and stylist Celine Chenoweth. They’re so talented an so delightful.

Today is also my sisters birthday. Happy birthday heidi!!!!! i LOVE you.

Well i’m gonna get back to it.

Ieeeeeeeiiii Will Always Love you…….

Apple Tree

It is the winner of my months of trying to think of an album title. apple tree!!! I think i thought about it for way too long and too hard. but i kind of do those things a lot. think about them and then decide something and then regret it and then change my mind. apple tree is the first one i didn’t change my mind about. anyway, it’s cool. it’s all coming together. annie and brandi’s cd design is rocking. doing photo shoot tomorrow in birmingham. i will wear a white dress. once you hear the album all these things will make sense to you. apple trees are mentioned 3 times.

i watched message in a bottle last night and then goonies was on tv. i keep drawing pictures of boats and ships lately. then when i saw those movies i was thinking that’s crazy. kindo of like when oprah decided to think of bubbles and then they appeared on her desk.

this week we’ll try to finish this album. brandon and i worked on mixing for hours and hours last week. each song is sounding more and more like a nice little package. next step is getting the album to sound like a nice little package. the kind you can sit down and listen through and think, this is a nice little package.

oh! also, everyone in nashville is sick lately and i decided i wasn’t going to be. so i’ve been walking around with a bag of suppliments. the miracle ones are called “Quick defense.” seriously recommend if you need to keep the health alive!!!

i would like to write more but it’s just time to sleeeeep.
mkay, bye.

It’s the name of a song that I recently discovered. It apparently is also the name of some insane waterfalls in Brazil. Check out these pictures! Holy nation, I need to go there someday. I have a thing with water, be it big waves or raging rivers, it’s exciting and terrifying to me at once.

I first heard the song on Babel. Then I heard it on NBC’s Friday Night Lights. I had to find it. Now I have it on my Itunes for those moments when I need to stir up the feeling like something big is happening. I feel it in my chest, it gets tighter. I even think it makes my abs tighter. What a nice work out.

Note From the Author

My friend Tim convinced me this was a great idea. That there was large massive communities of bloggers out there who care what i may have to say, even if it’s nothing more than a weather update or how much I paid for stamps that day. Well today the weather was crisp and sunny. I love when the seasons change. And I don’t think I have to go to the post office today, thanks to my dad, who mails out all my CD orders.

So, I’m not sure if i’m going to write about my days as a milkmaid genius or what, i’ve got ideas. I took a personality test this past summer and it said, not surprisingly, that I am a highly private person. Well at least I was on the day I took the test. Apparently today I’m not as private because i’m diving into the era of blogging. My friend Daniel Tashian has a blog where he writes almost every day, everything he has done that day. I wrote with him the other day so I made it into his blog. I also noticed that Imogen Heap has a video blog on her myspace where she simply reads off a list of what she has been doing, lately it has to do with house remodeling, which I now have a huge appreciation for. I also appreciate her music and her accent. She says she has an artist in residence living in her backyard. Yes please.

Today i recorded. It’s a brand new song that doesn’t have a name yet. Maybe i’ll call it “Pilgrim” because it’s kind of about a pilgrim, and I don’t have any songs with that title yet. The first half of the day i was thinking, i should just trash what i’d started yesterday and start over. But then the afternoon came and my friend Cason came over and he made it better. He helped me to lock it in. I think sometimes where two heads are better than one is making sure we don’t get lazy. I love thinking of production ideas and trying them out, but sometimes i’m too lazy to fully execute them…. you know, playing every note right on time with the click.

So why is this blog called “diary of a milkmaid genius?” Because I am neither, and i am a highly private person who needs some form of alias.
